Chapter Seven

Addison

"Shake it, baby!" Olivia shouts at Kasen, who is on stage with Bentley and Clayton.

He winks at her and then does a little jig.

Cami and I collapse in a fit of giggles.

Bentley and Clayton just shake their heads at us. Like Olivia, Bentley isn't drinking tonight. Olivia is pregnant, so she can't. I think Bentley is staying sober to keep an eye on the rest of us. Clayton hasn't been drinking much either. I've had two glasses of wine and a few sips of whatever Cami is drinking. It's going to my head.

I'm not drunk, but my lips are tingling, and I feel completely relaxed.

Clayton let me try whiskey. I'm still not impressed, but I'm not going to tell him that. I think he finds it personally offensive that I don't like whiskey. It's not my fault though. It tastes like a hangover if a hangover had a taste. I may not be old enough to drink legally, but I've had a few of those. Laney and I have wine and movie nights. Well, we did before she got married.

Tonight has been so much fun. Clayton has been all over me, so Kasen and Bentley have been giving him hell. He just flips them off and goes back to whispering sweet things in my ear. I've never seen him so happy and relaxed, like he doesn't have a care in the world.

Cami noticed it too. When the guys got up to sing, she leaned over and told me that we both look so happy. It's not the alcohol that has me floating miles above the ground. It's Clayton. Yesterday, I thought my heart was going to rip itself into tiny pieces. Today, I think it's going to swell so big it explodes.

He thinks he doesn't deserve me. I don't think anyone has ever been more deserving than he is. He may have done things in his past that were wrong, but he's a genuinely good man, trying to make amends and redeem himself. I still don't understand exactly what he did, but I do know that he regrets it, that he thinks I should be ashamed of him. I'm not. I could never look at him and feel shame. I love him, and I'm falling deeper by the minute.

"Oh, I love this song," Olivia says as the first few bars of Tennessee Whiskey flow from the speakers.

"This one is for you, baby girl," Clayton says, pointing at me. "You boys ready to give her that ole' country education?"

"Let's do the damn thing," Bentley says.

"Yeehaw!" Kasen shouts.

Even Jessa, who is hanging out near the bar, laughs at him.

We stop laughing as soon as Clayton sings the first line. Jesus. His voice is incredible. I think he could sing a grocery list and sound amazing, but this song in particular was made for a voice like his. He sounds so good.

When Kasen and Bentley join in on the chorus, it gets even better. I've heard them sing a million times. But I have never heard the three of them sing together before now.
